About Virus Protection:
We use McAfee's Virus Protection, Symantec / Norton AV, and Trend PC-Cillin. All three do a good job of protecting your system. None can guarantee 100% protection, so take your pick, and BACK UP YOUR IMPORTANT DATA REGULARLY.
But in any case, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, Install AntiVirus on your pc, and keep it current.
Scan your PC for viruses now!![]()
MicroSoft is only a key click away:
Want to check out MicroSoft's Knowledge Base? If not, I can't imagine why not. I use it regularly, and it helps in the majority of cases. It is the best free source of MS Information I know of, and it works well. Sound good now? If so, click below!
Lost your driver CD or Diskette?
DriverGuide dot Com is my absolute favorite source for windows drivers. Unless I'm dealing with a known-great company (like H.P.) where I know I'll easily find driver I need on their site, I look here, at Driver Guide. It takes a little work, but it's always worth it. I've never failed to find what I need here, and I've used it hundreds of times. HINT: the login name is "drivers" and the password is "all" After you log in, go directly to the third "tab" --- the search tab.

Security Issues

Win98 password list contains passwords for all Windows related logons. Passwords do not have to be the same for the Domain and the Local PC. If your initial logon is to Microsoft Network Client, then you will be getting your logon authentication from the Domain Server, but if you logon to Windows Logon or Microsoft Family Logon, then you will be using the local PC password to logon initially. If your local logon password is null (nothing) then your desktop will come up without intervention, and if the Domain password has been properly entered and saved once, then your Domain logon will occur without need to enter the password also. This is not good if someone can approach your pc. You should have a password at the local pc to protect your Domain password.
XP Network ID
To change Network ID in XP you must have Admin rights. Log on to the local machine, add the \domain\user to the Admin group.
But first, go to MyComputer properties / Computer Name / Change, and add to the domain.. You can change the pc name at this point.
XP won't boot

Scheduled Backup
Here is the process that works:
FIRST: (to prepare a tape)
Start NT Backup
Put a new tape in the drive
Backup will ask if you want to prepare the tape.
t may take several minutes to prepare the tape.
Go to Manage Media (removable storage).
Pull the tape from New Media\(poolname),
And place it in your tapes directory in the backup pool.
NOW,
Create a Backup.Bat file containing the following:
Ntbackup backup @c:\jobname.bks
/M NORMAL /L:S /P “TAPES” /V:YES /UM /HC:ON
OR
Ntbackup backup "@c:\jobname.bks"
/M NORMAL /L:S /P “TAPES” /V:YES /UM /HC:ON
Where:
/M = backup Normal/etc.
/L:S = logfile Full/Summary/None
/P = backup media pool name
/V = verify
/UM = unmanaged media (this is the trick to using a previously named tape)
/HC:ON = hardware compression
FINALLY,
Go to scheduler, and run your Backup.Bat on the times you want to do backups.
This process will use any tape you have in the drive.

Hubs vs Switches
All hubs are half duplex, no matter what their speed. Switches are full duplex. What's more, switches actually establish a connection, or an actual path between the source and destination and don't just broadcast the "from" traffic to all the other ports.. that is, they just deliver the packets to the destination rather than to the devices that don't need or want them. This intelligent switching alleviates congestion everywhere.

Internet connection sharing provides DHCP Server for dynamic IP addresses for TCP/IP... otherwise, (without ICS or some other DHCP server you'd need host files to provide static IPs.

Windows 95 to 98
with a "full install" disk, rename win.com to win.sav.
Error: "While Initializing device CONFIGMG: Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer." Remove all ACPI from System Devices in Device Manager, reboot.
System freezing during operation. Spinrite reports mismatched drive parameters. Ghosted drive to fresh drive which was appropriately setup in bios. Problems went away.
Sound gone. Control panel sound control shows active sounds, and attempting to play them returns visual cues that the sounds are (should be) playing. (Volume control is NOT muted.) Everything looks proper in System Manager; removing and replacing the sound driver does not work. DirectX also has to do with sound. Replacing DirectX (upgrading to DirX 8.x) fixed the problem. I assume it replaced some "broken" sound dlls.
Flowerball freezing / performing an illegal op. You must exit up to a dozen error boxes before you get back to the desktop, all else works. This problem may be due to DirectX conflicts with your video card drivers. Upgrading to DirX 8.x seems to fix this problem.
Flower ball freezing. Might also be pnp bios. Check System Manager for errors, perhaps remove PNP and PNP bios or ACPI bios under System Devices.. (which will require you to do a whole lot of re-install and reboots, so do this sparingly.)
Shutdown Problems / will not go past last Win98 screen .. could be due to CMOS setting "assign irq to VGA" ... should be ON.
Windows screen saver fails with: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. 3D Flower (any Windows Screen Saver) caused an invalid page fault in module
Cannot drag files from one folder to another, on same drive or to a different drive, with either a left or right click drag and drop. Ran SFC and replaced \Windows\Explorer.Exe, that fixed it.
Spool32 errors when printing from word, with Daytimer. Removed all extraneous software, no change. Happens even if Daytimer is shut down first. Replaced printer drivers, no change. Replaced McAfee AV. with Symantec.
"An error has occurred while opening or reading the printer driver file" while trying to print from a DOS "Clipper" type program running under W98SE. The program required that config.sys contain FILES=150 (or thereabouts. I used 199)
Workgroup Fiscal unable to see each other. On most pcs, the Network Neighborhood "flashlight" just searches endlessly. Could not see any pcs in the Fiscal Workgroup at the main server. Removed Fiscal's hub from the rest of the LAN, and shut down all pcs. Started 3 of them. 1 (one) could see the other 2, but the other two could see nothing. I removed and replaced File and Print Sharing from those 2 pcs. All okay.
NT AT command does not start the desired command/process, and is no longer in the scheduler. The command or process to run must be in \winnt\system32.

Fatal Exception (blue screen errors) and Windows Protection Errors at shutdown. Changed memory and did a fresh basic Win98 install, with Amptron 830 drivers. No change. Flashed bios up from 9-16-01 to 11-6?-01. that fixed it.

WKSSS error attempting to print from Works. Also various Lockup and printing errors, Spool32 errors. Printer was HP930. Its software was causing the problems. First removed and reinstalled the printer which cleaned up some of the general problems, but to remove the WKSSS problem, I turned off Numerical processor: Device Manager \ System Devices \ Numeric Data Processor \ Properties \ Settings \ NEVER USE THE Numeric Data Processor
DHCP server manages the pool of IP addresses, handing them out dynamically upon request, and maintains a database of which machines (names) or devices are using them. Static IP addresses such as Print Servers or PCs using static addresses may be entered into the database manually. Thus you can only use DHCP for WINS resolution IF you are maintaining the database manually. (At the very least, the Server itself will have a static address which must be entered into the database. WINS server is a much better implementation for name resolution, it requires no manual input into a database, it queries all the devices and keeps track of them without intervention. Thus, a pc or print device with a static address can be found using WINS. To keep it simple, you use DHCP for dynamically assigning IP addresses at the PCs (Server assigned IP) but use WINS for name resolution.
System crashing, consistently when in Outlook, trying to edit and send an old message from draft folder. Repair of Office did not fix the problem. Attempted to stop and start Exchange, it hung stopping Directory Service. (Exchange 5.5 on an Active Directory 2000 Server) Downed server, restart cleared the problem.
MSGSRV32 Nothing else worked, so I upgraded to 98, which fixed the error, but the system still crashed, so I uninstalled any program that seemed unnecessary, particularly netboost and browser enhancements, as well as crashguard type programs. System worked okay after that.
Outlook Express 5 running extremely slowly, takes almost a minute to come up. All other programs running okay. Removed RealPlayer, AOL, Norton Utilities, no change. Uninstalled IE5, Webtools, and OE5, and reinstalled IE and OE. That fixed it.
Eudora not working, blue screens moving between various Win95 Windows, ScreenSaver (FlowerBall) freezes, attempted upgrade to IE5/OE5, which blew out system, requiring boot with shell=Progman.exe in System.Ini to even run windows. Upgraded to Win98, all okay. No idea how this first occurred.
QBDAgent illegal operation error... remove QBDAgent from Startup, or reinstall / update.
To disable menu usage tracking in ME and Word, go into the properties of the taskbar and uncheck "Use Personalized Menu's" in ME, in Office it's under "Tools/Customize/Options" tab in Word or some variation of that in other office products.
Error: "MPREXE Not responding" at startup. System will not go past the error message. This error would appear to indicate user configuration or network related problems. A Safe Mode boot removal of Network related components did not fix the problem, nor did uninstall of NetScape. Booting in single step, I did not load registry, config.sys or autoexec.bat, but I did load the Windows drivers. The system reported problems with an extended list of VXDs, including DFS and VNETSUP.. I removed each related SubKey under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlset\Services\VxD\ and also removed THE NetScape SubKey under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE. System booted okay.
Wintam 6.3 will not install and run. Reports that it can not find ActiveX. Make sure Autoexec and config are correct (check a good system), then run \Wintam\AsupdateExe from the server, which sets up all the necessary Drive C files, and updates a zillion system DLLs. Upon Reboot, run Asupdate again, which will do a little more to C:, then it will run WTamsetp.Exe. Set Data and Exe drives to Network drive (F: in this case.)
Pipes ScreenSaver breaks (dissolves) up VERY SLOWLY... if you try to gain control of the system while it is breaking up, you have to wait until it is completely off the screen before you can use the system. This SEEMS to be dependent upon the type of monitor that is associated with the system. I find that using "Plug N Play" monitor type (Display settings / advanced) seems to help speed up the process.
HP 840C Inkjet would not print across peer to peer network. It would only spit out a blank page. Reinstall did not help. Installing it locally resulted in the same behavior. I stripped the system, (which had been difficult to get to operate in this peer to peer network originally because it had previously been in a Novell network) and did a clean install using only MS IPX. Then I installed the printer by clicking on it in network neighborhood and letting Windows get the drivers from the PC which the printer was installed to. (I did not use the HP Install process.) All okay.
Ghost "disk is write protected" error... is referring to the Floppy, it wants to write an error log to the diskette.
NTBackup / 2000 would not take a tape from The Backup Media Free\Travan pool. In order to avoid confusion, I created a Backup\Used pool, and added the /p "Used" and /um commands to the scheduler. I also told Backup to always add new media to the backup pool when fresh media was inserted into the tape unit. Finally, I also removed the /d and /n commands from the scheduler, which allows the tape to be named at the time it is backed up.
HP LaserJet 6P 6MP with PostScript ROM "not enough memory" error caused by Verdana Font. HP's site says various fonts cause this problem. I had to cut and paste the web page I was printing into Write and change the font to Arial, which allowed me to print my text.
Adaptec EasyCD fails near end of disk copy, indicating that the output device could not keep up (buffer underrun) Changing the source CD to use DMA resolved the problem.
System hangs with cursor at black screen just before going in to windows. Remember, the video is resetting from DOS bios calls to Windows hi-res capability now, and the video card may well be the culprit. First, simply try re-seating the video card. Or try another. Bad card, or badly seated card can also can cause Windows Protection Errors.
Xerox 2230ij plotter not printing from AutoCad, nor from Properties/Print Test Page on either LPT1 or LPT2. It reports that it is out of paper, but it works fine on another PC. Both of this PC's parallel ports work fine with another printer. Problem was: This PC had an HP DeskJet 930C Series printer, that was monitoring the port(s) and conflicting with Xerox's driver. UnInstall the HP Software, Remove the printer and its drivers, then had to remove all files except HPPCL.DRV and HPFSCA.DLL (and any files specifically installed by AutoCad) that relate to the HP printer. Search for HPZ, HPS, HPF, Hewlett, and 930. Install and test the plotter. Then get the "Corporate" drivers for the HP printer from HP's website, they do not have bidirectional port monitoring, and install them. Should be okay.
CDs with CD Burners generally work well no matter what slave / master / primary / secondary configuration you use, but they don't seem to like having one of the devices being on UDMA 33/66/100 . Best to put both CDs on a standard 40 pin cable, and leave the hard drive or other items on the UDMA cable.
Novell Installation would not allow me to add IPX for MicroSoft Networks, nor would the Microsoft Network Client "stay" in Network Properties. Removing and reinstalling NE2000 and all properties did not help. Addition of the NE2000 attempted to install Novell drivers and Novell ODINSUP. Very ugly. Removed all Network properties, then removed all entries for Novell in Registry. (Quite a few) Rebuilt the network from Network Properties, went smoothly.
Win2000 Server: Dynamic Registration or Deregistration of one or more DNS records failed because no DNS servers are available. Apply Service Patch 1
Zip drive crashes, and the cd disappears.. Only happens with Fuji disk, c/b bad data, or bad boot info / format on the drive.
ATX System spontaneously rebooting at night, even though it is turned off. System had an external modem on it, and the serial port was waking up the pc and booting it. Client would come in, in the morning, see their pc on, and log on to the net. However, this unwanted boot anomaly had the secondary effect of putting the Aip drive in a state where it would fail the first time you tried to use it. A proper reboot would rectify the Zip drive problem until the next time the system was awakened by the modem.
The NT AT command would not start the desired command/process, and after it tried, the AT command would no longer be in the AT scheduler. Actually, it was not the AT command that was screwing up. The AT command called a batch file which did not have rights to the directories it was trying to backup with NT Backup. Even though we were logging in as Administrator, the Mapped drive directories in question were created by the Local accounts, and we had to take "ownership" of them as the Administrator before the batch command could back them up. (Too Weird.)
Outlook hanging trying to access inbox at initial startup. NT eventlog shows there are no licenses available for the user (there should be) Exchange will not "stop." NT eventlog says Network problems are preventing connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server Computer. Shut down and restart NT, all okay.
Windows 98 / Win98 often has trouble shutting off the pc. It starts to shut down, then hangs. Microsoft knows about this. Make a shortcut on your desktop that as this command in it: "C:\Windows\Rundll.exe User.exe,ExitWindows" (omit quotes) But first, make sure VGA is enabled to use an interrupt, and APM is turned off in CMOS.
Network Properties would not "hold" MicroSoft Networking, or Novell Client32 as clients, and would drop any or all of the other client and protocol information. The registry was corrupt, and ScanReg seemed to fix it. BUT, the hard drive was also extremely full (of TEMP files,) and may have been contributing to the problem.
Various registry errors can be resolved by running ScanReg.exe from Win98 at the dos prompt.
No CD showing in My computer, system reports compatibility problems with IDE controller, you may have the second IDE channel turned off in CMOS, but "on" in the IDE controller properties in device manager. (TekRam drivers are known to do this.)
AGP cards / motherboard combinations. If your system is crashing at the point that the video drivers "kick in" (symptoms may include scrambled video, or black screen with hourglass, or spontaneous reboots before getting to the desktop,) then try disabling AGP2x and AGP4x settings in CMOS.
Placing a slower hard drive and CD in a newer UDMA system resulted in not being able to read the CD, and generally flaky behavior, resulting in the loss of the existing Windows installation. (It would not start.) Placing both drives on the Secondary IDE resolved the CD issue, allowing me to upgrade the 95 installation to 98, thereby recovering the configuration.
Twice, I have lost the contents of a mode 4 or less drive when dragging and dropping from it to a UDMA66 drive. The first time, the UDMA drive was on a UDMA66 (80 conductor) cable, with the slow drive on the slower secondary controller. The FAT was trashed on the slow drive during the drag and drop. I can't "see" any reason for this, since Dragging and Dropping "shouldn't" be doing anything to the source drive's FAT. Subsequently, I used a slower (40 conductor) cable on the fast drive while I was doing drag and drops from and older drive, with success. Then, I had my second failure. So the mystery deepens. In the future, I will put both drives on the slower secondary as master / slave, and see if that solves the problem.
Win2k Windows 2000 Server Starting Exchange Internet Mail results in MSExchange IMC error trying to bind TCP/IP listener socket. (Only one usage of each socket address permitted.) MSIMC is internet mail. It uses SMTP, so that is likely that SMTP has been started on another pc, which has bound that port on all the servers. Stop SMTP elsewhere and set it to start manually on that pc so this problem won't reoccur, then restart Internet Mail.
The three things most likely to be "slowing down" a pc. A failing network card could be broadcasting like mad to try to keep the network connection. The system (registry) could be so "gummed up" that the system is not working well, requiring a major "cleanup" of unnecessary programs, (or a complete reinstall or Windows,) or, there could be a virus raising havoc in the background.
AOL 6.0 initial install and upgrade from 3.0 fails in Win95a. Removing AOL and network adapters and installing "clean" does not help. Uninstall AOL, upgrade 95a to 95b (using 95a's registry) and don't keep any "newer" files from the previous install.
Could not receive POP3 mail with Outlook Express. PC is on a LAN, using MS Proxy to access the internet. Internet browsing and HTML email work fine. Re-installed MS Proxy client to no avail. Turns out client had "turned off" proxy within a communication program, and forgot to turn it back on.
MSGSRV32 caused an General Protection Fault in PIDGEN.DLL during Win98 install may either be INCORRECT DATE in CMOS or bad Product Key Number.
WAOL is linked to missing OLEAUT32.DLL on Win95a installation. OLE installer is to be found with the Regclean 4.1 program. Run Oadist.Exe
System runs slowly, operator is able to type faster than data goes to the screen in Word. Drive lights flash. System frequently reports FAT errors on startup. NYB (boot sector / stealth) virus.
Right click on an item inside explorer, or choosing copy, paste, etc from title bars or icons causes errors to occur. (Windows not behaving.) Could be the W32.mtx (backdoor) virus at work. This virus comes in on a lot of different email attachments, porn related and otherwise.

Windows Shutdown Shut Down problems / will not shut down / hangs at shutdown Blue Flag. Try different video card, or use VGA interrupt.
Word Files are huge. What should be a 50kb file saves to a 1.4mb file. It prints properly. The problem is in the template, it has accumulated unnecessary, and unprinting characters. To avoid the problem, delete the Template you have been using, and create a new one. To salvage the files which are already too large, save them to .RTF format which will strip out the unwanted code.

DHCP Server MAY be used for WINS resolution, but it is a crappy way to do it, because any static IP addresses must be entered into the DHCP database manually. In a big network, this could prove nearly impossible to administer. So it is used primarily to allocate, or lease, IP addresses from various pools, according to each Scope which you set up.
WINS server was Microsoft's internal way of providing name resolution, before they settled on DNS which was the UNIX / Internet way. Functionally, WINS and DNS do the same things, WINS for the internal (TCP/IP) net, while DNS historically was used for the Internet, or TCP/IP networks in general. Now, MicroSoft is settling on DNS. BUT, WINS must, or certainly should be used in any internal NT network, and DCHP should only be used to lease IP addresses.
Windows 98 / Win98 often has trouble shutting off the pc. It starts to shut down, then hangs. Microsoft knows about this. Make a shortcut on your desktop that as this command in it: C:\Windows\Rundll.exe User.exe,ExitWindows
.VCF files are Virtual Card Files, appropriate to Outlook Express. All they contain is Address Book information, which can be "had" by simply adding the sender to your address book. You can ascertain this by renaming the .VCF file to .TXT, and reading it. .VCF files can be ignored.
Error 650 connecting to ISP. Remove "Logon to Server" and extra protocols in DialUp settings. Or, see Error 650 below.
Windows would not start in Normal mode, crashing at the desktop before the icons
loaded. There was Not Enough Memory to (re-) run Windows Setup from within Windows
(Safe Mode.) Running Setup from the Dos Prompt resulted in an error part way into
installation, a conflict or improper reference to DYNAPAGE device. There was No
way to install from DOS. Removing Config.Sys and Autoexec.Bat did not help the
memory issue. So I ran (RUN) C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\Setup /IS which bypassed the
memory problem and succeeded in fixing the problem. /IS means Ignore Scandisk.
BIOS ROM CHECKSUM ERROR (NOT CMOS Checksum Error) indicates a conflict within
BIOS. (System will not beep, or allow entry into CMOS.) Now, this could be a
bad BIOS chip (unlikely) or, a conflict with some other BIOS on a daughter-board.
Look for conflicting boards.
System fails to start, hangs on first blue screen. Sometimes a conflict with a startup process (such as McAfee.) Remove Autoexec and config.sys and try again. Check for hardware interrupt conflicts. Try starting in Safe mode, check system, and restart. If the problem is not with the first, but the second blue screen, sometimes you just should wait several minutes to let Windows work through some problem it has found.
Error 650 connecting to ISP. Also, Error 635. Seems to have been bad modem drivers, or a bad modem. Removing Dialer and modem, and reinstalling them did not help, but a new modem and drivers fixed the problem.
Windows 98 shutdown problems / shut down / Win 98 has problems turning off some ATX motherboards under various configurations. This problem may occur "out of the box" but more often occurs during a change of hardware or drivers. This problem has been acknowledged by (at least) Dell, and by extension, we can assume MicroSoft knows about it, but they have not provided a working patch. But there is a workaround. This command will accomplish a shutdown. RUNDLL USER,EXITWINDOWS (Put it in a batch file / shortcut.)

To repair a damaged registry from the Command Prompt
Export the registry to a new export file
EXAMPLES:
regedit /l:
When you start your computer, you may see the following message:
It's now safe to turn off your computer
This behavior can occur in any mode.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Vmm32.vxd or Wininit.exe file
is missing or damaged.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
To Obtain a New Copy of the Wininit.exe File
Extract a new copy of the Wininit.exe file from your
original Windows 95/98 disks or CD-ROM to the Windows
folder. In Windows 95, the Wininit.exe file is located
in the Win95_11.cab cabinet file on the Windows 95 CD-ROM
or disk 11 of your original Windows 95 disks.
Restart the computer.
To Re-Create the Vmm32.vxd File
Restart your computer to "Command Prompt Only" from the
Startup menu.
Type the following:
cd \windows\system
ren vmm32.vxd vmm32.old
Then reinstall Windows 95/98.
MORE INFORMATION
A Vmm32.vxd file is included on the Windows 95 disks and
CD-ROM. Extracting this version of the file does not solve
the problem, as it is an incomplete version of the file.
You must run Setup to re-create a system-specific Vmm32.vxd
file.
If Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) is
enabled in your computer's Basic Input/Output System (BIOS),
the "It's now safe to turn off your computer" message may
not be displayed when you shut down Windows 95/98.
Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows
or a Windows application.
( Vnetsup.vxd -or- Dfs.vxd )
CAUSE
This problem can occur if you remove the Microsoft Network
components in Network properties. When you do so, a reference
to the Vnetsup.vxd or Dfs.vxd file is not removed from the
registry.
RESOLUTION
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating
system. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To work around this problem, use either of the following
methods:
Use Registry Editor to delete the StaticVxD value in the
Vnetsup subkey under the following registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlset\Services\VxD\vnetsup
-or-
Use Registry Editor to delete the StaticVxD value in the
DFS subkey under the following registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlset\Services\VxD\dfs
Setup has detected a corrupt setup (.cab) file
Cannot copy cab files to hard drive, or, after doing so they
give the above message when setup is run from the win98 (se)
directory previously copied to the hard drive.
Remove hard drive partition, boot with proper version of Windows,
preferably boot with the windows CD install / floppy boot disk
then let Windows do an automated install from the CD.
MPREXE not responding
CAUSE
This behavior can occur for any of the following reasons:
- Your password list (.pwl) file is damaged.
- A service or program loading during the startup process is
conflicting
with another service or program.
- You are using user profiles.
- There is a hardware conflict on your computer.
- A hardware driver on your computer is missing or damaged.
- If profiles are enabled, Windows may not be able to contact
the primary domain controller's - Netlogon share when looking
for a Config.pol file. (Windows checks for a Config.pol file
even if policies are not used.)
- Your primary domain controller (PDC) is not local to your
Windows 95/Windows 98 clients.
- A single user profile is corrupted.
Windows 98 won't shut down, stays at blue flag. See:

But first, try turning on (auto assigning) an interrupt for VGA in Bios.
Cannot drag icons can not drag icons cannot move icons can not move icons on desktop or in folders. First, remove every instance of programs that seem to use the desktop, for screen saver or anything remotely close. Re-install windows, and replace all the files with the original files. Remove ShellIconCache directory in safe mode, and add the string value "Max Cached Icons" with value data "500" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer (do not add the quotation marks)
None but 2 users could log on to the net. The NIC had just been changed in the Server. Nothing else was changed. Resetting the switches allowed them to build new routing tables, and let the users on.
Upgrading with a 95 or 98 "full install" disk instead of an upgrade disk.. Just rename win.com and run setup from DOS.
local area network access VERY slow ... able to copy local CD to local drive in 12 minutes, but copy to network server takes 148 minutes. Network card properties was set to autodetect lan speed. I set it to full duplex 10-T. Okay. (Network copy lowered to 18 minutes or so.)

Explorer has caused an invalid page fault in module Explorer.Exe System would only boot to a bare desktop / no icons / no links. This turned out to be due to the client attempting to remove MS IE5. I first removed RealPlay progs, ICQ and a few others, to no avail. I tried replacing Comctl32.dll to no avail. I tried repairing IE5, but had to reinstall it which fixed the problem. All this was accomplished with shell=progman.exe in system.ini to boot. The Run command to get to Software Uninstall in Control panel is: (run) control appwiz.cpl
In W9x, when Explorer.exe "blows up" and will not run (Explorer.exe causes program fault in Explorer.exe) and Windows will not run, you can edit System.Ini and change shell=explorer.exe to shell=progman.exe. You may now run your upgrade of Windows from the Progman File menu (which you previously must have set up your system to access from a directory or the CD) ... then while setup is running (paused between screens) press alt-tab and bring up a dos window in Progman, re-edit System.Ini to shell=explorer.exe so your "fix" will take effect after your upgrade (setup) is complete.
Word 97 would not read Works 4.0 documents from another hard drive. Installed Works 4.0, and that seemed to somehow "register" the works files, then Word would open and read them.

Slow modem connections, usually connecting at only 26.400 was caused by Age of Empires DirectPlay settings. Uninstalled Age of Empires, speeds increased to 46.6
Regserv causing errors with kernel32 and rpcss at logon. History: This system previously failed to boot, and running Scandisk deleted or otherwise affected an unknown quantity of files. I re-installed Windows 95b files, and network settings, including Remote Registry, resulting in the problem noted above. Removing Remote Registry resulted in the loss of the choice to add "SERVICES" in Network Properties. I removed all network issues, booted to safe mode, added the Network card, configured the network, and got "SERVICES" back. But the original Regserv problem remained. Since this machine could not afford to be completely stripped of Windows, the problem was left unresolved.
Windows install fails (system halts with blacked out rectangle above the progress window) after checking the system configuration. Virus protection was on in BIOS.
CD Rom (which previously worked, is no longer available in Win 95b normal mode, but it shows up in Safe Mode. The Hard drive controllers (VIA IDE) now have errors in the Device Manager in safe mode. Removing the CD or the IDE entries in Device Manager and letting Windows "find them" again has no effect.
I removed the NOIDE entry from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET
\SERVICES\VXD\IOS
This fixed it.
Error: "Insufficient Memory" during AWDFLASH. Caused by config.sys. Boot without config.sys or autoexec.bat

33.6 modem is slow, only comes up at 9600, even though it has been "set" to 115kb. Using Standard drivers, as scanned by W95. Install appropriate drivers.
Modem dials, remote modem rings and answers, and local modem immediately disconnects. Either the IRQ is conflicting with another device (serial port or perhaps a sound card,) or the driver is incorrect. MAKE SURE YOUR DIALER IS POINTING AT THE NEW DRIVER.
Conner Backup was failing with a QBWIN failure, always at the same point while scanning files. It turns out that the last file scanned was the last file on the drive, and actually, it was the "job" that was causing the crash. I "canceled" during the file scan, and that allowed Backup to load, then I systematically loaded each job, then deleted the job that caused the program to crash. That fixed it.
Two icons of the Windows directory on drive C appear to point at exactly the same place.. same byte count, same number of files, tunneling into one of them results in the other one bringing you to the same point when you click on it from the task bar. Scandisk finds no problem. Turning on the test for duplicate file names in "advanced" in scandisk caused scandisk to find a problem on C, which resulted in renaming one of the directories to Windows.--0, which now had less files and directories in it. Deleting the duplicate caused no problems, and "fixed" the anomaly.
Windows starts in safe mode, but not in normal. Scandisk fails during directory checking. Win95 Setup fails during preparation for file copying. Windows Protection error, stops at black screen. (Hard drive passes spinrite test and refresh of low level.) Swapped CPU, okay. Slowed down original CPU, also okay.
Wordpad cannot open. OLE does not work. Note Windows Registration number, remove Wordpad from Windows Setup, then reinstall Windows over itself.
Error Message regarding WTT32.EXE after saving file and closing Excel, then opening Tiny Term. Search in Win.Ini / System.Ini reveals WTT32 is related to .TAP files, which belong to Tiny Term. (they are startup script / command files.) This problem just started about 8 weeks ago after 2 years of problem free operation of all programs involved. I installed the
.REG file found in Century\WTT directory, re-invoking Windows "knowledge" of WTT. Seemed to work.
Outlook express gets SMTP error 501, improper syntax or parameter during send of mail. receive works fine. This happened after some sort of MSN wizard screwed up explorer and mail, and even though all settings are correct. Registry error. Restore registry in Win98 with SCANREG /RESTORE. The registry is saved only once per day unless you do a manual save in System Tools. So you should have a previous registry from before, even though there are only 5 copies (including your current bad one.)
To get files from an older Outlook Express or Outlook into newer Outlook Express, export the files to Exchange, copy the exchange .pst file to the new machine, import it to the new outlook, then import it into the new Outlook Express.
Flaky behavior. Seemed like bad CPU, or bad memory, or motherboard. System would work for hours, or even days, then inexplicably lock up (/ freeze / crash.) Tried new memory and CPU. I used it as a test bench pc for a few months, and it always did what I needed okay. Then it failed to start entirely, not even light up the monitor active light. Removing the Hard Drive (and CD Rom) power cables would allow the system to enter POST. Replaced the power supply. Note, this case and power unit were from a 486-100 system that was exhibiting similar behavior, and was deemed unfixable. (I don't believe I had tried new power, because the problems were too inconsistent and infrequent.)
Windows reported VFAT error at startup, and would not start for the end user. By the time I saw the system, the VFAT error was not showing up. I removed a few spurious entries from Win.ini and (regedit) RUN, but system still would not boot past the black screen after the initial Blue Flag. The system would boot to safe mode every time. Removed Video drivers, and reinstalled, using the original files, rather than the "newer" files that had been put in place by other programs. All okay.
BDS software reports i/o error after an update. Network is operational to the Unix box. Problem was with file permissions after the upgrade. BDS checked, and fixed permissions.
Zip disk reports 0 bytes used, 0 bytes available. Removed the Iomega software, the problem went away. I don't consider this problem "fixed" but the immediate problem of using the Zip drive was resolved for the time being.
Drive Copy DriveCopy copies 70% of the drive then stops with a "not enough memory" error. System has 16mb RAM. Booting from clean DC disk. The system also will not format and copy system files, reporting that there is insufficient memory to copy system files. Turned off Video Bios Shadow and External Cache. No solution found. Moved Drives to another PC.
Screen Saver Flowerball - checkerboard configuration, freezes and puts an error window on the screen. This is a clean, new full install of Win98SE with NO extra configuration. Pressing OK (Enter) returns the system Desktop, fully functioning. We consider this to be a Screen Saver anomaly, which shows up in a variety of installations, with no other problems being manifested. It is not worth "fixing." Change to a different Screen Saver.
HP Pentium reports This program has caused a divide overflow error... during boot up. CMOS has lost its settings. This is the second time in a few weeks. The battery is good, so the motherboard is bad. CMOS entry is ctl-alt-esc or ctl-alt-some f-key.
Exchange is down. Starting DS and IS results in failure, with mention: the dependency or group failed to start. I checked all the dependencies, all okay. User had restored DS from the tape backup in order to recover a lost document, but had not restored IS, so they were mismatched and Exchange could not run.
Video shows only the shortcut arrows, and some Icons. No text. Removed the video card from Device Manager, and re-booted.
Modem disconnects (audible click) about every 3 minutes. Has a fair amount of trouble logging on. Bad modem.
Can't open port (modem or port already in use) during modem diagnostics. Replaced modem, okay. (Also, you should check for irq or port conflicts in device manager and CMOS.)
Alloy Multiuser Dos not allowing printing to printer at LPT1. System was shut down improperly. Delete \PB\Wksstat.Dat to remove locks from the printer. Note: ALT F10 enters MultiUser Setup for assigning printers and ports and queues.
To apply the AMD K6/2 patch it may be necessary to slow the buss down from 100mhz to 66 mhz, or to temporarily install an different processor, or lower the multiplier to 3. (The patch must be run from windows, which may be in safe mode.)
Task Updates which have an attachment cause an Illegal Operation, the details of which state that "Outlook caused invalid page fault in EXSEC32.DLL". Closing the error window kills Outlook (removes it immediately.) The error is in Exchange 5.0 which requires the patch found at FTP://FTP.MICROSOFT.COM/BUSSYS/EXCHANGE/EXCHANGE-PUBLIC/ ... FIXES/ENG/EXCHG.50/POST-SP2-STORE read the READMT.TXT then apply PSP2STRI..EXE per the instructions
NT Backup Failing to go past the Information Store Database, and backup up the shared / data drive on server. Exchange errors noted in Event Log: Network problems are preventing connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server Computer" and "The required MAPI profile cannot be created because the file mapisvc.inf cannot be modified" and "Microsoft Exchange Server computer is not available ... " These problems occurring apparently because the "swap file" otherwise known as the paging file (My Computer / Properties / Performance) is too small. Enlarged Paging file. Problems seems to be solved.
Internet lockups. Everything else works just fine, but browsing or email causes machine to hang. Upgraded to Win98 and IE5, no change. Removed dial up adapter from network, and re-installed. Not perfect, but much better.
Windows Protection Error .. another one ... this one was ES1688 drivers problem. They had been updated by some install or another. I found the problem by searching the drive for files and folders that had changed recently, and I found the old/good files in a backup directory under the system directory. I replaced the newer files with the older files, and the problem cleared up. NOTE: this error often is a VXD conflict.
Msgsrvr error with cm8330 requires later sound drivers in system folder for Win98

Video comes and goes, (blinks on and off) finally blanks out totally. S3 Virge DX chip. Bad card. Blowing compressed air on the main chip caused the card to work continuously. Replaced card.
NetGear Network Interface card is not "configured properly" error starting Windows. The NIC needs to be connected to a valid network connection, or the card needs to be set to a particular "speed." The card is trying to autodetect the speed of the connection, and since it cannot, it is "not working."
Net Yield, end of day process failing every night with a file read error. Daily processing is fine, but the end of day process works all the files pretty hard. (300 50mb of data) This process fails from a multiple of pcs, the data is on a Novell server. So the problem is likely either with the hub, the cable to the server, the server NIC, the server HD i/o card, or the server hard drive. Removed and replaced coax cable, tee conn and terminators at both ends of the server to hub connection. The process completed that evening without the read errors.
21 Print Overrun / error on HP4 with 2mb printing complex pages .. not enough memory. Added 8 mb of memory, but it still gave the same error, changed properties to Raster Graphics, and turned ON Page Protection and Aggressive Memory Tracking. The printer had two problems: insufficient memory, and improper settings. (I'm certain this problem would have occurred if I had not installed the memory, but had made the Properties changes. HP's book indicated that 2mb was NOT enough memory for what we were doing.)
Net Yield, a Dos program on Novell won't boot. It returns an error regarding node not available or something like that. Autoexec requires set commands, both were REM'd out. (Set language and rrruser node #)
Printer overload or printer overflow ?? or some such. LaserJet 4 is only printing half a page of clip art or SmartLaser form. Memory is inadequate, it fills up the memory then prints what it's got. Printer has only 2 mb, should have 4 or more.
Windows kernel could not load. Tried reinstall, but during W95 setup scandisk could not finish due to corrupt data / invalid long filename. Chkdsk found many crosslinked files. Copied Registry to root, removed all offending directories and files, copied registry back to \Windows, and reinstalled. All okay.
Warranty repair. (System was working at one time in this configuration.)
Black Screen Startup Failure:

I tried: New video, new CPU, new RAM, different Keyboard, remove all cards, disconnect CD and FDD, check for BIOS errors, change AGP / Bus speed from 60 / 30 mhz to 75 / 37.5 mhz, PCI video instead of AGP video, no change. Next, I re-installed Win98. That did it.
Inappropriate A: drive access when opening any window. Registry had A:??.wav files as sound events.
Win 95 Error message: After Logon, but before desktop: White box: Explorer caused an illegal operation ... system then reports a registry error, suggests restoring registry from a backup (that's a laugh) and will not finish loading. I tried upgrading to Win98, and w'98 tried to fix the registry before installing. It froze at 40%, but a reboot to Win'95 showed that the "fix" was successful. NOTE: this system had the SKA / Happy virus, and a few others.
Could not install a new Mailbox (User) in MS Exchange, at the NT Server using Exchange Administrator. Attempting to do so yielded an error: Directory is in use. (approx) Attempting to Stop the Exchange service (in Control Panel/Services) resulted in a hang when it tried to shut down Directory Services (DS). Shutting down NT and restarting resolved the entire issue. (I would always try to stop the service first though.)
When System properties reports that Drive C: is using Dos Compatibility mode, and no 16 bit drivers are at play, you probably have a virus affecting the system, either in the boot track, in a DLL somewhere, or in an executable that might be called during windows initialization.
ABIT jumperless installs the AMD 233 at 2.8 or 2.9 volts core, and it should be 2.2 volts. So the AMD 233 crashes. Set the voltage down, over riding Abits settings.
Drive Copy fails to start C to D image copy, it crashes with a small rectangle in the middle of the screen. Boot Track Virus Protection is on in BIOS.
RNAAPP was causing IExplorer to crash at Dialup. This is a program related to the dialer. Simply removing the dialer didn't help, but removing all networking and re-installing Explorer (from the start menu) did the trick.

Could not successfully install Proxy Client. It would start to install then fail with a message indicating its failure. Proxy renames the original Winsock.Dll to Winsock.Old and creates its' own Winsock which will call the old one when necessary. both must exist. IF there is no Winsock for the client to name "Old" then it will not be able to install. Be sure the one that is in place when you install is indeed the original. You should be able to find a copy of the original in SYSBACK as a reference.
Error during startup of Outlook; reference to EMALSCAN .. First, check to see if Outlook has Groupshield Scan choices turned on. (They shouldn't even be on the menu system.) If they're chosen, un choose them. Also look at the VirusScan console for discrepancies. Turn off Email scanning. (Assuming that Groupshield is active at the server.) Then remove the reference to EMALSCAN in the registry.
Error: "Office cannot find mbsextn.dll.." Seems to have been related to inadequate removal of Groupshield at the workstation. I simply removed the reference to it in the registry.
One other thing to look for (thanks Jim) is if GroupShield was uninstalled wrong. Go to Outlook, select Tools, Options, Other, Advanced Options, Addins, and remove X from Client Network Associates.

Starting Windows in Normal mode results in "It's now safe to turn off your computer." screen at the point where Windows would normally start. There is a message, but it's too quick to see. On one system, I could not determine the cause. (I removed all conflicting hardware, changed the video card, and checked cmos.)
On another system, the symptom was a bit strange, it would sit on the 2nd Blue Flag screen for 10 to 20 minutes before exiting to the shut down screen. I never watched the whole time. It was a video card conflict. I first tried changing the video to 16 color, 640 x 480, and when that didn't do it, I removed all extra hardware, then finally replaced the PCI video with a 16 bit card, which "fixed" it.
Outlook error, date message was sent, and the date of appointments is "wrong" at recipient's machine only, both reflect a date "later" than today, or the scheduled appointment. That machine's regional settings were incorrect, and outlook apparently attempted to adjust the appointment and date sent times to reflect the accurate time and date of the sender.
Hard drive controller will not install properly in Win95 after a motherboard upgrade, the Device manager keeps reporting problems even after installing new drivers for the motherboard. In Safe Mode / Regedit, remove the parent directories to any key that has PRIMARY -- (hard drive info) there should be 2 or 3 such entries ... then reboot, and the system should re-register the hard drive hardware.

Every process in w98 takes "forever" as in: several Minutes to open My Computer, or the start menu, etc. Every process takes several hundred or thousand times as long as normal. This hard drive was working fine on a different motherboard, with a VIA chipset, and now it's on an Intel Chipset, but it Seemed to pick up the changes fine when it first started, but upon restart, the registry was corrupted several times, each time it copied an older copy it seemed to freeze upon starting up again, but I finally realized it was just taking forever.

MicroSoft AOEDemo (Age of Empires) Game software will not re-install after having been removed with ADD/Remove Software in control panel. Note: AOEDemo has its own Uninstall, which I did not use. The install program appears to be functioning, but stops short of actually copying the software to the drive, after having created the necessary directories. Reinstalling W98 over the original install did not fix the problem. Wiped out '98 and installed from scratch, all okay.

Unable to browse network in a two PC peer to peer net. The "Old" PC sees the "New" PC and its' files, so both cards appear to be working. But the New PC does not see the Old. Network properties seem proper. A known good cable yields same results. The protocol in use is netbeui.
During diagnosis, it was noted that the Old PC logs on the user, but the New PC does not. If you log off and log on again, it resolves the problem. System has '98 and '98Plus installed, as well as POS software. It was felt that a dll was corrupted or copied over by a bad one, or some of the installed software was conflicting, but there was no resolve. The network was only going to be used temporarily, and logging on twice to do a few jobs posed no problem.
Proforma will not allow you to move a file: "Error copying case file." This could be either a corrupt data file or a bad index. First, try re-indexing the file under file maintenance. If that does not work, all the data files need be sent to Proforma to see that they are not corrupt. When they return a data file after repair, it should be placed on the hard drive and re-indexed, or it will give the same error as a corrupt file.

What was going on:
It seems that the original dialer worked because it was already set up. But the mail dialer was subject to a stream of data coming from the keyboard that was screwing up the input. Also, video card seemed sporadic. Also, motherboard may've been bad.
Checking ISDN: from inside the Proxy if there is one, ping both routers. Ya gotta know their IP addresses to ping them. Telnet into them each, and see if both channels are up, and how long have been on line. If all is okay, ping the remote workstation. You can find its IP address in
Network|Wins Manager|Mappings by looking for it by its' description/computer name. If you can't see it, it may be failing to attach to the router. Telnet from that workstation to the router. Can't find it? Look at Device Manager to see if the NIC is okay. Look at all Network Properties on the workstation.

Mprexe error [white box] also, many white box errors: explorer error, or whatever process is running (such as regedit)) ... Mprexe is related to passwords, and to multiple providers, (users of security events, such as network products, and outlook,? and other things happening concurrently.) So if the problem happens at login, it is probably bad password list, (see MPREXE elsewhere in this document) but if it is happening at other times, it may have to do with other dlls used by these security events being in conflict. So use find to look for MPR*.DLL, MSVCRT*.DLL (use a comma to search for more than one item at a time) then check dates, and decide which ones to keep. If the latest dates are in the \windows\system folder, then it's a done deal... keep them, and delete the others. This problem was a .DLL date mismatch. NT Server requires DCHP and WINS to support TCP/IP networking. DHCP-Dynamic Host Control Protocol: Server assigns IP address out of a pool. If you are using DHCP, the workstation sends a request to the server for an IP address, which will assign one with a Lease of three days, which it will renew at the half life. Now, you need WINS-Windows Internet Name Service to handle text names. When you get your IP address, you notify the server of your Name, and it registers it with WINS. If then if try to attach to, find, or ping a name, WINS resolves the name to the IP address, so you can get to it.
Note: If you use static IP addresses, you need WINS for name resolution. There could be a situation where you might not want name resolution, i.e. client server installations where there was no peer to peer. (don't know if exchange could handle that) If you use dynamic addressing, DHCP will also provide name resolution, so WINS is not actually required, I suppose. Where you get into trouble is if you use static IPs, and don't put in WINS.
Peer networks use LMHost for name resolution if you use only TCP/IP. IPX and Netbeui broadcast, so there is no need for name resolution.
ProForma (WinForma) will not print from the Peer PC which has the printer attached, while the Peer PC that is printing across the network can print. All other processes on this PC print fine. ISDN transfer problems; a single email taking several minutes to download. The router would dial the first channel and connect, then dial the second and fail, then hang up, and dial again. Mail was only transferring during the short period that the first channel was up. Several things happened to fix the problem. Alt-D Reset at the remote end, and "fiddling" with the telco line between the routers. (It is possible that the routers were locked in to a single channel mode and removing the connection between them forced a renegotiation which put them back in dual channel mode (much like what sometimes happens with a modem which will not work until power is removed, no matter whether you send a reset to it or not.)

Supra PCI ModemEnumerator 2260 modem would not diagnose. Further, it consistently loads twice after being removed. One seemingly good install, and one yellowed out one. During Diagnostics (more information) the modem cannot open the port. Removing and replacing the V.90 drivers repeatedly did not help. I removed the modem items in Device Manager, then retrieved the Product ID number and ran W95 setup from inside Windows, reinstalled all the files, and kept all the newer ones. During startup, Windows found and properly installed the modem. Windows FAX was not working properly prior to this modem fix.
If a specific device conflicts with a device loaded from the Registry, the device specified in SYSTEM.INI takes precedence. However, if the device specified in SYSTEM.INI cannot be found, an error will occur.
Many Windows 95 driver models, such as IOS (for disk drivers) and the network, support dynamically loaded device drivers. These VxDs are not loaded by the VMM32 real-mode loader, but are loaded by a device loader that is responsible for loading and initializing the drivers at the correct time and in the correct order.
For example, for SCSI adapter miniport drivers, the device loader is *IOS. The entries for a SCSI adapter are found in this Registry key:
Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class
Because there is no StaticVxD=xxx line in this Registry entry, the VMM32 real-mode loader does nothing when Windows 95 identifies this device.
Configuration Manager attempts to find any device node that has a DevLoader= entry in the Registry. The device loader (in the previous example, *IOS) examines the Registry, finds the PortDriver= entry, loads the driver and any associated support drivers, and initializes the adapter.

(NOTE: AMDs' web site lists this error as a "rare" problem with the K6/2-350, and indicates the error is in some W95 timing loops.)
This occurred from a warm boot after removing Network Properties: NE2000, Protocol and Service. This problem was concurrent with Networking not working, and misc flaky problems, including "Windows Protection Error" at startup. Replaced motherboard, all problems except Windows Protection Error were resolved. See next post for resolution.

Restarted system, then reinstalled CD ROM. Nope. Problem intermittent, but still there. I eventually rebuilt this entire system, piece by piece, testing at every step. Included were new cables, hard drive, floppy, .. everything... twice. The motherboard was even a different type, the 1st being Tyan, the second being ASUS. I also changed memory speed (from AGP / 66 to full buss speed / 100, and tried the processor at 350 mhz at 100 bus, 333 at 95 bus, and 300 at 75 bus. The processor was an AMD K6/2 350.
Since the problem remained after I had determined that at some point absolutely nothing remained that had been there initially, and all settings were changed, I got a bright idea. AMD 350 doesn't like something in the configuration. Probably the 16 bit network drivers. Changing the Chip to an IDT 240 at 60 mhz solved the problem.
It would be worth while to put the AMD back in and test it after changing the NIC to its supplied drivers instead of the default Windows NE2000 generic drivers.
NOTE: AMDs' web site lists this error as a "rare" problem with the K6/2-350, and indicates the error is in some W95 timing loops. They have a patch which replaces several files, (actually from MicroSoft,) but the patch did not work in this case. BUT they also say the problem goes away in Windows '98.
NT server printer 2 (DownStairs) not printing across printlink connection. Switched lpt1 with lpt2 and tested, problem follows printer driver or port, not the printer. (Downstairs printer prints okay using UpStairs port and driver, UpStairs printer fails on DownStairs port and driver.) Removed current printer driver, chose another already installed printer driver, re-shared it for DownStairs use, okay.
!!!!! NOTE: !!!!!
This problem most likely is a bi-directional issue .. the downstairs printer is on a "print-link" device which uses telco cord, and definitely does NOT support bi-di communication. So I have turned off bi-di printing in printer properties in the downstairs printer, which may solve the problem. We need to wait for the server to be shut down again to test this.

System starts to boot, gets past blue flag, then hangs at black dos screen just before going into windows. This turned out to be a device conflict, specifically, the network card was failing. Could not install USPSupp to ABit board, Scandisk failed after 10 retries, repeatedly. There were too many characters. Also, during re-install, I tried to delete \Windows after copying it to a new directory, and could not, using DEL or DelTree. I had to put the drive as the second drive on another system in order to remove the offending directory. After that, I re-installed Windows, and Scandisk now failed at a similar directory, nested in the Old Windows directory. It turned out to be too many characters in the path name. Scandisk can only deal with 66 characters in the DOS pathname. (Win 95) I renamed and relocated several directories from within windows, and resolved the problem.

[It was noted that the DOS modules were writing directly to the hardware when the program was run on the original system, a SLC 486 class DOS system (the modules' screens appeared to open with a sideways scroll from one or both sides, a clever old dos trick done to make the program look cool, done by "poking" screen info directly to hardware memory. This was primarily done to gain speed.)] No amount of tweaking the DOS environment helped, and it was noted that the known good installation on the original hard drive would not work in the Pentium system. Turned off L2 internal cache, and the program worked. The Pentium was just too fast, (timing considerations.) Tested in a variety of systems, it worked up to about 240 mhz before failing consistently.

To cause Windows 95 to attempt to reinitialize the protected-mode IDE driver, remove the NOIDE entry from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET
\SERVICES\VXD\IOS
After you update the registry, restart Windows 95. Windows 95 will then attempt to initialize the protected-mode driver for the controller. If no problems are encountered, the file system and virtual memory will operate in 32-bit mode, and Device Manager will not display an exclamation point in a yellow circle for the IDE channels.
If the protected-mode driver is not initialized properly, an error message will be displayed and the NOIDE registry entry will be re-created. Windows 95 will use the MS-DOS compatibility mode file system the next time you start the computer.
MORE INFORMATION
================
This problem can occur with an IDE controller that requires serialization between the primary and secondary IDE channels. The protected-mode drivers for these IDE controllers can fail to be initialized if one of the following situations occurs:
- One IDE channel has a supported hard disk, and
the second channel has a CD-ROM or other type of
drive that requires real-mode drivers to be
loaded. Because of the serialization between the
two IDE channels, it is impossible to access the
hard disk in protected mode and use the other
device in real mode. This causes the protected-
mode driver to fail initialization, and the NOIDE
switch is placed in the registry to prevent
future errors. Both disk devices then operate in
real mode.
- The driver for the IDE controller is manually
removed from Device Manager and then reinstalled,
or the protected-mode driver is disabled and then
re-enabled. Some PCI controller drivers are not
designed for dynamic enabling and disabling, and
can cause the protected-mode driver to fail
initialization.
The Windows 95 device drivers for the following
controllers are known to exhibit this behavior:
- CMD PCI-0640 PCI-IDE controller
- Standard Dual PCI-IDE controller
- Opti Dual PCI-IDE controller
///////////////////
If you are having trouble removing IDE controller from Device Manager, try removing Plug and Play Bios from System Devices in Device manager, and let the system re-find everything from a cold boot. (be sure you have the ultra dma and usb drivers in place before you do this.)
. If that doesn't work, remove win.com and re-install Windows, and KEEP the NEWER drivers.
. If that fails, remove win.com and reinstall windows and REPLACE ALL the drivers. (Be prepared to re-install all software that does not run because of the changed drivers.)
If Win95 appears to be entering setup each time you start in normal mode, but starts windows in safe mode, what is happening is it is looking for a proper ProductID number. Re enter the appropriate information, and it will start normally.

ERROR: HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address XXXX:XXXXh. XMS driver not installed.
CAUSE
=====
This error may be caused by a fault in the computer's external cache controller or by bad or mismatched memory chips on the external cache (generally 64, 128, or 256K cache SRAM). If disabling the external cache does not correct this problem, there may be a problem with the motherboard at the current processor speed, A20 handler problems, or bad or mismatched main system RAM chips.
RESOLUTION
==========
Use the following troubleshooting procedures to
isolate the cause of the XMS test failure:
- Disable the external cache (also known as
"secondary cache" or "CPU cache") in CMOS.
NOTE: If disabling the external cache corrects
the problem, replace the memory (SRAM) on the
cache with the type and speed chips recommended
by your hardware manufacturer. If this does not
correct the problem, you may have a bad cache
controller. Contact your hardware manufacturer
for more information.
- Disable Turbo in CMOS.
- Disable Fast Gate A20 and Fast A20 Display in CMOS
- Try different machine switches with HIMEM.SYS
(/M:2, 11, 12, and 13).
For more information on this procedure, type "help
HIMEM.SYS" (without the quotation marks) at the
MS-DOS command prompt.
- Replace main system RAM chips with the type and
speed memory modules recommended by your hardware
manufacturer.
NOTE: You can disable XMS memory testing by adding /TESTMEM:OFF to the device line that loads HIMEM.SYS in your CONFIG.SYS file. For example,
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:OFF
Disabling XMS memory testing may allow HIMEM.SYS to load, but you may experience random file corruption, system instability, or other problems until the underlying hardware problem is resolved.
MORE INFORMATION
================
The HIMEM.SYS version 3.10 included with MS-DOS 6.2 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 automatically performs an XMS memory check (/TESTMEM:ON) when loading. Note that the version of HIMEM.SYS included with Windows 95 (3.95) does not automatically perform an XMS memory check unless the /TESTMEM:ON parameter is set in the Config.sys file. The nature of the HIMEM.SYS test, as opposed to the ROM BIOS power-on memory test, is that HIMEM.SYS writes series of 0FFh's and 000h's in various 32-bit combinations. The ROM BIOS test does not generate difficult bus-loading conditions; instead, it checks for hard stuck bits (fatally bad memory cells). Therefore, HIMEM.SYS is much more likely to detect general-purpose hardware problems. The ROM BIOS test generally detects seriously flawed main-memory RAM chips themselves. (This is not to say that main RAM can be ruled out when HIMEM.SYS detects a failure but ROM BIOS does not.) Other symptoms of unreliable XMS memory may include file corruption or system hangs in applications that use XMS memory. For example, you may experience persistent corruption of group files (.GRP) in Windows or your system may stop responding.

When you try to remove a modem using the Modems tool in Control Panel while Device Manager is open, you may receive the following error message:
Rundll32.exe has performed an illegal operation.
CAUSE: The error message occurs because Windows 95 detects that the system configuration has changed and sends a message to the Modems tool to update its list of modems at the same time that the information for that modem is being removed from memory.

Here's an interesting one. Donnas system was notably slow on the net, but otherwise ran okay EXcept for the program CCHWin, a program installed to the server then to each individual workstation. First, the work- station setup was notably slow, then, when complete, running the program would lock up the machine before any apparent activity took place. Guess what? The network card was in half-duplex, while the switch was in full-duplex. Setting both to full-duplex fixed it.

Problem:
OPTI VIPER BOARD AND CYRIX 686 P200+ CPU. Can't set the mother board up correctly for this cpu the cpu clk selector setting are 50mhz, 60mhz, 66mhz. The internal cpu clk settings are 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 All have been tried but when the computer is switched on it says P150 at 120mhz running the computer still works ok at this speed. The specifications say up to 200mhz.
---------------------
Answer:
The "200MHz" in the Opti Viper specs applies to Intel chips. The problem comes in the way Cyrix names their chips and the way they made the 6x86 CPUs.
A Cyrix 6x86 P200+ actually runs at 150MHz, but performs like an Intel 200MHz, hence the "P-200+" in the name. Unfortunately, the 6x86 only accepts a 2.0 multiplier, so to get 150MHz, you need to run the board at 75MHz. The Opti Viper board doesn't support that speed. 66MHz is max.
An Intel 200MHz chip will accept a 3.0 multiplier, so 66MHz x 3.0 works for that chip. The Opti will support that chip.
The best you can do for the system is set for 66MHz clock with a 2.0 multiplier. The POST should pick up the chip as a 6x86 P-166+ (runs at 133MHz), and it will perform as such.
Note that the new 6x86MX chips will accept different multipliers, so you don't need a board with 75MHz to run them.
75MHz is great because it speeds up the memory and PCI buses, which improves system speed more than the faster chip, (subjectiveopinion.) However, unless you have one of the few boards with asynchronous PCI, the PCI bus is sped up to 37.5MHz, beyond the 33MHz upper spec limit. This can cause odd problems for some PCI devices. Also, any board that uses an Intel chipset and has a 75MHz setting is overdriving the chipset, which Intel doesn't support.
